The Truth

So, it's time I reveal my current weakness. Why, you ask? Because I need help!

I am currently addicted to SUGAR!

Before my pregnancy I had finally figured out that I don't need food to be happy. I had dropped 15 lbs just from learning not to focus on food or on my weight. I had stopped eating so much, and I found comfort and happiness in other things (particularly in my husband). My desire for sweets was much lower than ever before. Of course I still ate them, but I didn't spend any energy thinking about when I'd get my next sugar fix.

During pregnancy I lost my desire for sweets. They say you crave pickles and ice cream when you're pregnant. I just craved the pickles, not the ice cream. I did crave natural fruit sugar, and I craved smoothies for a few months. At the end of the pregnancy my appetite really kicked in. I didn't crave anything specific, but I ate a lot. Too much, in fact.

Well, Curtis was born and my appetite lessened. I was excited to feel like a normal person again.

One night we had some friends over for FHE. For dessert they brought these. . .

The infamous PINK COOKIE.
I had 2 that night.
However, they decided we should keep the rest of them...bad idea!
In the next 3 days I ate them all. ALL OF THEM!
Is that not the grossest thing you've ever heard!?

From that moment on (and I'm NOT exaggerating) I have craved sugar
There is something in those cookies that is habit forming!
I thought about them for days,
and I tried to think of ways I could get more!
(They should probably be listed in the Word of Wisdom)

I have to get over this! I know I need to eat healthier for Curtis.
He certainly does not need sugar filled milk.
I certainly do not need empty sugar calories.
Ah, but it's hard.
Don't those cookies look so enticing!

So, my friends, please leave a word of encouragement.
Perhaps I can come read your comments when I'm feeling the temptation coming!

  1. I wish I had something brilliant to help you out . . . but I, too, am on a sugar kick. I keep telling myself I can't do that to baby girl, but my sweet tooth has seriously gone into overdrive.

Luckily, a good piece of fresh fruit can usually satisfy me for awhile. (The no-bake cookies I am making today will probably satisfy me after the fruit is gone. ha!) :)

  2. I can't help too much either since I am addicted to sugar myself. I once went almost two years without it and I look back and wonder how. I find it helpful to drink my favorite flavor of crystal light throughout the day to help my sweet tooth and it tends to work for me. It satisfies my craving and keeps me hydrated and more full plus it tastes better than plain water to me. I like to freeze my water bottle full of it for a little while and then it has the consistency of a slush! Anything to trick myself into thinking it's a treat. ;) I also chew sugar free gum when I get a craving. That helps a ton for me! I say just be more aware, don't take all the sugar out of your life, and don't always be so hard on yourself. Sometimes we all need a treat!

  3. Maybe it's a post partum thing because I've beenhaving the same issue! It usually hits me about 2:00 in the afternoon and pecks at me until I satisfy it. Maybe you could give me some tricks on how you got to the "I don't need food to make me happy" stage!

  4. P.S. I did think of a trick that sometimes works. When I feel a sugar craving coming on, I put on a Crest whitestrips. It serves two purposes: first, it whitens my teeth, and second, it prevents me from eating anything for 30 minutes, in which time I can sometimes talk myself out of whatever treat I had in mind.

  5. AH! Me toooo!! Wanna hear something even worse? My milk is some how going away. I went off white sugar a week and a half ago and my milk went to like HALF of what it was. I started eating sugar again and it went back to normal! WHAT THE?! Does that mean most of my calories I was getting was from Sugar?!!? SAD!! and GROSSE!!! ah! Well, I dont know what to tell you but I will read everyones comments after in hopes they help me too. I will stay away from the pink cookies and you stay away from the gelato at Costco.... take my word for it :)

  8. I recently went 30 days with no sugar (fruit was exempt of course) because I, too, was addicted to sugar. In fact, when I went off it, I started getting dizzy and nearly fainting. Yeah, it was that bad. It had to have been similar to a drug detox. Anyway, the only way I stuck with it was to post my 30-day no sugar goal on my blog, so that everyone who read my blog knew about my goal. That way I was much more likely to keep to it. Each week, or any time I was really struggling, I wrote a post about how I did that week. And knowing that other people would know if I failed is what helped me make it the whole 30 days. I also bought a giant pack of sugar-free gum from Sam's Club and always kept it with me. It was hard, but the 30 days was enough to help me kick the habit. Now that I'm not addicted to it any more, I can eat it in moderation so that I'm not deprived all the time. One more thing that helped me was keeping sugar-free candies with me such as sugar-free lifesavers. It kept my mouth busy for a while so the craving would pass and it tricked my brain into thinking it was getting a fix. Good luck!

  9. when i was trying to lose my baby weight after having riley i on top of exercise i was counting my calories. b/c everyone has a weakness to something sweet i knew that i would have that same problem. for me the easiest solution was to buy a big box of 100 calorie packs from costco and at the end of the day i would enjoy a back of cookies. all day if i was craving the sweets i would remind myself that i get a back at the end of the day and it always seemed to help. plus the truth is its okay to have a brownie or a cookie every once in awhile. you will find what works for you, you will get back to what you want to be even though it might not feel like it right now. trust me i have been there (i am currently there) with riley i gained 60 pounds but with hard work i was able to drop 70. you will do it, it takes time. don't be too hard on yourself. just enjoy it, enjoy being healthy, set small goals for yourself. something that you have to obtain with in the week or something like. ways to track your progress, it makes it fun and you get to see what your doing. but mainly right now you are breastfeeding (i didn't) and so your body needs a little more, your body will get there.

  10. Well, I am not going to really be any help, but I have to say how LAME it is that women have the hardest time losing weight! Its like that husband and wife who went on a diet together. The husband ended up being half of what he used to be, and the wife shrunk her boobs. How lame! ha ha All I can say is that the most I have ever lost while nursing is 10 pounds (after 15 lbs from the birth) while on Weight Watchers. That was with exercising and dieting!
Do this: Eat 1 pink cookie every other day for two weeks. Then move to once every 2 days for 2 weeks. And then once every third day. That way it isn't cut out completly and you will really savor the times when you get to enjoy the pink delishious-ness!

  11. I think they put something in those sugar cookies to make people addicted to them. It wouldn't surprise me... Anywho, maybe try eating more fruit. That way you still get sugar but it's healthy. There is a thing called Bountiful Baskets and you pay $15 on Monday and then on Saturday you go pick up your basket. You get about 6 different fruits and 6 different veggies and they say it would cost about $50 at the grocery store. I haven't done it yet, but I think it's pretty much the coolest thing ever and I really want to (I keep forgetting to order it on Monday). Just an idea :)
