When?

How early is too early to start getting things ready for the baby to come?

I've been feeling great lately and have a lot of energy, and don't want to wait until I'm huge and uncomfortable. We've started looking at and pricing cribs, dressers, strollers, etc, so we can decide what we can/need to buy and what we can wait a little longer to get. I'm just not sure when to actually start getting things together (crib, dresser, glider, diapers, clothes, nursery bedding, etc). My fear is that we'll wait to long and then have a TON to do and a TON to buy right before he comes. There's obviously always a chance there could be some complications or bed-rest, which would also make it much harder to get anything ready. There's also a chance that we could be given some larger gifts from family/friends, and so it's also hard to know exactly what to buy and what to wait to buy. For those who really know me, you know I HAVE to have everything completely prepared and ready in order to feel peaceful.

Any advice about when to start getting things ready?

  1. It's never too early! We got most everything ready early on and we were glad we did when I got put on bedrest for my last trimester. We saved things like the high chair, pack and play, etc. (things we did not have to have right when she was born) for family members and showers who wanted to buy us bigger things. One tip I got that was a big help was to buy a pack of diapers/wipes every time we went to the store to stock up now. We didn't ever have to worry about running out for months! We also hit up the outlets and bought a lot of seasonal stuff for cheap in bigger sizes. Don't stress too much! It will all come together. Enjoy the planning!

  2. devri has some awesome ideas! don't stress too much. my recommendation would be, you could set your registry up with everything you need and then when you purchase something have it taken off of your registry. also, my best friend did the smartest thing and i wish i had done that. she made a list of EVERYTHING you need for when the baby comes and each time she was out at target or where ever she would pick up at least one item from the list. they had all their stuff ready by the beginning of her third trimester which was also nice b/c she too was put under house rest/ bed rest.

  3. I went out and bought the crib when I was only about 4 months along :) Stroller and car seat were soon to follow! I don't think it is ever to early. I personally don't like the convertible cribs (that change into a toddler, bed and then into a bed) because my babies dinged the crib up pretty bad that by the time it was time to turn it into a normal bed it looked really tattered and old. My little sister just got a nice lightly used crib, changing table and glider on KSL. You might want to check it out. High chair I waited until Tanner (first baby) was around 4 months old, because really you won't use the high chair until around 4-6 months anyway.

  4. Oh and another thing, you could always let your family and friends get you the playpen, high chair, or swing. They aren't a must for when baby comes home and if they don't get them then they are easy to go out and get, bring home and set up.

  5. Save the fun things for family to get for yall. Things like bouncers, swing etc But the standard things I would get like the crib and dresser. That is unless you really think someone else will get it for you.
I actually LOVE my convertable crib. I will be able to use it forever and not have to buy a new one until he is too tall for it! It has saved us a lot of money and space. And they aren't any more expensive than the normal ones so you could always get it and later see if you will use it.
When are you having your showers?

  6. Hey it is never to early to get stuff. I had Boston a month and a half early. At that point we had everything needed to be at home. We waited on the bigger stuff until after he was born and actually ended up getting it for 10% off at Babies R Us. If you register for stuff and dont get it they will give you 10 or 15% off for the 10 days or something after your due date. Good luck.

  7. oh and I also heard that white isn't the best color for cribs becuase it shows all the little marks from the children. I don't know though, I have no personal experience, but thats what I heard. I would probably still get it if it really matched my theme like it does yours becuase white is really easy to paint.

  8. it's never too early, but you also don't need that much when they first come. Lots of diapers and a ton of burp cloths, changing mats, and a couple changes of crib sheets have been staples for us the past few months. If you have a Costco membership, the Kirkland wipes are the best. We got a box before Julia was born and it has been four months and we still have 2 packs left.

As long as you have a car seat to bring the baby home in, then if you don't have everything, you can figure out what you actually need and want for your baby after he's already here.

It also helped me to have a friend to had a baby go to the store with me when I was registering to tell me what she actually did and didn't use

  9. It's never to early to start getting stuff, but as far as clothing and things, I would hold off until after you have a baby shower, because you may not need to get clothes. Cayman is now 2 and we actually have only gotten him a few things here and there, because we had so much given to us and I'm glad I didn't spend a lot of money on things that I had plenty of. There are some good ideas above. We were going to do the buy a pack of diapers and wipes and stuff each time we went to the store, but we would forget, but that is a good idea, just make sure you buy a variety of sizes because you never know how big your baby will be and how fast they will grow out of them. Cayman was in Newborn diapers forever and then pretty much jumped to size 2. And some babies are only in newborns for a few weeks. Anyway, I'm sure you'll be ready, just remember, it's not that big of a deal to have EVERYTHING right when the baby is born, because you really might figure you need or don't need something after he comes for example and this is just me, but I'm really glad I didn't get a boppy (I was so close to buying one), but I would never have used it. So things like that it's okay to see and wait what you will need. Also, Cayman spit up a ton as a baby and not all babies are spitter-uppers and we couldn't predict how many bibs and burp clothes and which kind of burp clothes worked the best until after he was born. There will most likely be stuff to buy after he comes and that's okay. Just make sure to have the basics!

  10. were cleaning out soon to be babys room tomorrow. We already have our crib (that was given to us) and changing table (that was given to us) and Roger is just going to stain them and put them in babys room in the next month. Its never too early. I totally agree with the whole "I dont want to be huge and uncomfortable later" thing and have to do it all then and now that were out of the danger zone to lose the baby... why not get ready!?!?

  11. I think waiting until the baby shower is the best idea. We didn't get anything until then (about a month and a half before baby), because we ended up getting a LOT of our main baby items there. But, that doesn't mean I didn't do any prep beforehand. We did buy a stroller early, and the car seat. But, waiting is not a bad thing - you actually spend less money that way, in my opinion. We also bought a "debut" outfit to come home from the hospital in.

I LOVE our white crib, but babies do like to gnaw on them, so...

  12. I am a Graco fan and trust their products. I don't have much advice on when to get the big stuff. As for other things, I would suggest making a list of everything you need and then save up. After your last baby shower hit the store and get all those things you still need.

  13. As already mentioned. It's never too early. I had my last day at job on Friday and the next week is when I was going to get the last minute things that I didnt end up getting at my baby showers, and he came that Monday. So my mom had to go get what I needed. But as far as clothes go, I didnt get hardly anything on my own. ALOT came through showers, but it's always fun to get a few things on your own:) Love your changing table choice. I like having drawers and such with it, instead of just a changing roll table thing.

  14. That is one of the travel systems that we are looking at as well! If we do buy that system, we plan on ordering it from Bed, Bath, and Beyond with a 20% off coupon. So far, that seems to be the best deal. You will have to let me know if you find cheaper :) It is always nice to get a good deal.

  15. Go for it now if you are excited and ready to. There's no reason to wait. Have fun enjoying every moment of the planning and preperations. It's all so exciting!

  16. Rach I can't even figure out how I found your blog but I'm so glad I did! Congrats!! Our little guy is almost 2 and I've loved every minute of being a mom. Figuring out things to buy is so difficult. I read a ton of reviews on everything. There is so much to buy so a little at a time works great. Watch for Babies R Us coupons and look at Burlington. They have tons of the same stuff Babies R Us has for way cheaper. I love their baby dept. Good luck!
